Wolves, Canis lupus, and Karakachan shepherd dogs in Bulgaria
Wolves, Canis lupus, and Karakachan shepherd dogs in Bulgaria
Wolf research under this program aims to enrich the knowledge we have about the wolves’ population in Bulgaria, as well as to soften the centuries old predator - human conflict. Our field work on wolf research covers large areas and the intensive field activities require long walks through the working areas.
Public awareness and education about the importance of protecting wolves and their role in nature is a main priority. Our new Large Carnivore Education Centre contains rich and interesting information about the four large carnivore species in Bulgaria the wolf, the bear, the lynx and the jackal. Special education programs for pupils are organized, but it is open for all public. We use socialized wolves for education purposes and also there is a large bear enclosure with one bear also kept for education purposes.
The reintroduction of the Karakachan shepherd dogs as livestock guarding dogs to safeguard livestock against attacks by wolves is seen as a key factor to enable peaceful co-existence between humans and wolves and for wolf conservation in Bulgaria.
Your help would be highly appreciated, in our field research on wolves, as well as in our large carnivore education centre, and as well as in the breeding centre for this extremely rare species of wonderful dogs.
